Students from mixed-status families—such as those with undocumented parents—may still qualify for in-state tuition and financial aid. It's important to complete the correct application based on your own eligibility: the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) for undocumented students, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. This helpful guide from Immigrants Rising explains the differences between the two, so you can choose the right one and maximize your financial aid opportunities.
California Dream Act Application
The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) is a state-based financial aid program that supports eligible undocumented students pursuing higher education. Launched in 2012 by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), CADAA helps students access financial aid, including the California College Promise Grant Fee Waiver, Cal Grants, work-study opportunities, and state programs like EOP and EOPS. To get the most financial aid, it’s best to apply early, as the deadline is usually March 2nd each year.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a key step in applying for federal financial aid, including grants, work-study, and loans. If you're from a mixed-status family, it’s important to understand the eligibility criteria and how to correctly complete the FAFSA to access available support. U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens can apply.
The FAFSA Hub for Mixed-Status Families offers up-to-date information and resources to assist students from mixed-status immigrant families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It provides guidance on eligibility, application procedures, and addresses common challenges faced by families where one or more members may lack a Social Security Number. For comprehensive support and resources, visit the FAFSA Hub
If you’re concerned about privacy, please be aware that some undocumented individuals may feel uneasy about sharing personal information on the FAFSA, as it could be shared with immigration agencies. If this is a concern for you, you may want to consider applying through the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) instead, which is designed for undocumented students and those from mixed-status families to access state financial aid. If you're a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen with undocumented parents or a spouse, and are facing challenges completing the FAFSA, the CADAA offers an alternative pathway to financial support. For comprehensive information on eligibility and application procedures, visit the California Student Aid Commission's dedicated page here
