About the Cosmetology Pathway
Cosmetology is the study and practice of professional care of the hair, skin and nails. The Cosmetology Pathway offers programs of study in Cosmetology, Barbering and Skin Therapy. The Cosmetology Program offers training in hair styling and cutting; chemical treatments, including hair coloring and lightening, permanent waving, hair straightening, hair cutting with clippers, razor, shears; skin care, and nail care. The Barbering program offers training in hair styling and cutting, waving, shaving techniques, hair cutting with clippers, razor, shears, and skin care. The Skin Therapy program begins every Fall for incoming students. It is a one-year program and students obtain 24 units of instruction. Upon completion, students will be prepared to enter the beauty industry as skin care technicians, spa managers, educators, makeup artists (both conventional and theatrical), product retailers, and business owners.
The Cosmetology occupation is governed by stringent state laws which stipulate that all who enter the field must complete 1,000 hours of instruction. The programs in the Cosmetology Pathway are carefully designed to prepare students to pass the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology examinations.
