Keys to Transfer Success

  1. Finish Math & English Requirements:  Finish your Math and English requirements early. Take English and Math every semester until you don’t need any more. Do this, and you will be ahead of 60% of the students who are thinking about transfer.
  2. Follow IGETC or CSU Graduation Requirements: You can complete the lower division graduation requirements for a four year institution here. Classes are smaller and much cheaper! In some high-unit majors, such as certain engineering or science disciplines, you may prioritize major requirements ahead of GE. Meet with a counselor to review your options. You will also be able to earn a Certificate of Completion by finishing your CSU GE or IGETC.
  3. Complete your Associates Degree: If you are transferring to a CSU look into the Associate’s Degree for Transfer to CSU in Administration of Justice, Early Childhood Education, English, Kinesiology or Mathematics.  Also, you may have enough coursework for one of LATTC’s Liberal Arts & Sciences AA degrees. Meet with a counselor to see if you are on track.
  4. Complete Major Prep Courses:  In addition to your general education, do as much of your major preparation courses at LATTC as possible, especially if you hope to pursue a highly competitive major or university. For the UC system major prep is a must! For impacted majors, you may be competing with students who have everything completed. So be prepared. Learn to use the ASSIST.org website.
  5. Meet with your LATTC Counselor often:   Partner with a counselor to devise your transfer strategy. Requirements can change, so it’s important for you to keep up-to-date, especially if you are thinking of more than one university to attend. Your counselor can get you started, make referrals for more services and keep you on track.
  6. Have a plan: Course planning is the key to your success. An Educational Plan or Transfer Plan in PeopleSoft, created by your counselor, will help you to plan out courses to meet prerequisites, to satisfy GE and to meet your major prep coursework. A good plan will also outline the right timeline for you to apply and transfer.
  7. Attend Transfer Fairs, Workshops and Activities: Attend the transfer fairs, workshops, campus trips and open houses. These are valuable information resources as you work toward choosing the universities to which you’ll apply, these services are available free of charge.
  8. Make an Appointment with a University Representative:  Meet with a university representatives in the University Transfer Center. These representatives are a great source of information for any campus you are considering, they can give you unique insights to their campus programs and opportunities.
  9. Apply to More Than One University:  Apply to your dream campus, but also apply to some backups as well. Don’t assume you’ll get in to your first choice. If you shop well, you’ll find good matches to choose from. Somewhere out there may be the perfect school. Come to the UTC, we will show you how to research for it.
  10. Get involved in your major or career early:  Join transfer clubs, organizations, volunteer or work in the area of your career choice or major. For selective colleges, this is important. For experience, it gives you a chance to see if this is your calling. Being around people with your same goals and interests makes a difference. DoSomething.org :  One of the largest global orgs for young people and social change, with 4.9 million members in 130 countries who tackle volunteer campaigns that impact every cause.
