LATTC Culinary Students Meet the Great Chefs of Europe
Europe TripSix Trade Tech students along with three professionals in the baking and restaurant field, led by Trade Tech culinary instructor Robert Wemischner, went to France and Switzerland. The visit was centered around The European Baking Trade Show and competition for the World Cup of Baking. The French won, while the Americans didn’t place this year. The Trade Tech contingent toured bakeries, including the R and D Laboratory of a well known French bread bakery. They visited the "Trade Tech" of Paris, a trade school run by the Paris chamber of commerce. They also visited “chocolatiers”, with behind the scenes tours and meetings with the owners and managers. There was also a visit to a chocolate manufacturing plant in Switzerland along with a tasting of its chocolates and a class about the history and manufacturing of chocolate. The visit was culminated with a visit to a winery overlooking Lake Zurich. What a trip! 080513

Cesar Chavez Comes to Life at LATTC
PhotoIt is a one-man show about a single historic figure, but “Stories of Cesar Chavez” truly is about a person of many facets. Local actor Fred Blanco brought his performance to the Grand Theater this week as part of the ASO Cinco De Mayo celebration. The performance was a splendid journey through the life and times of Cesar Chavez and brought a new foundation and a new resonance to a man who some of us honor but few of us really know. Blanco worked seamlessly between the fields of Delano and the halls of cincodemayoSacramento. He captured Chavez as a person, the one behind the unionization of the farmworkers and someone who was a very religious man as well as a family man. It was a great presentation. Coming on just before Blanco, was the dance group “Corazon de Mexico”, a ballet folklorico group that dazzled the audience with traditional dances. Some of the performers were the children of our very own Phil Schmerber. 080508

Employee Recognition Luncheon Honors Service to LATTC
employee recognitionLongevity and a commitment to this institution were clearly evident at this year’s LATTC Employee Recognition Luncheon. Awards were given out to Trade Tech employees with 10, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of dedicated service to this college. Emceed by the stylish Elton Robinson, catered by Steve Kasmar’s culinary magicians and coordinated by Lori Hunter and her amazing committee, the event gave us a chance to honor some of our colleagues who have committed so many years to make this college what it is today. It was repeated time and time again, that Trade Tech is among the best places to work. That was evident by the number of employees receiving plaques. Even instructor Mohamed El-Tawansy grabbed the microphone and talked about his first year on campus, more than 30 years ago. It was a great event, and next year we will celebrate its 20th anniversary! 080506

VocEd Students Celebrate “Tools for The Trade” Nominees
VocEdThe cheers came from both the large departments and the small. They chanted names and applauded their instructors. The culinary students hugged the welding students. International students were among the nominees. Several recipients were emotional. The sign graphics students made a huge banner. Of all events on this campus, there are few things more exciting or more inspiring than the awarding of scholarships. The “Tools for The Trade” rally and nomination announcements created tremendous excitement among the vocational education departments at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Gathered outside the D-building “fish bowl”, department head Carole Anderson fired up about 300 students supporting the nominees from their disciplines. Thanks to the LATTC Foundation and Foundation president Steve Needleman the “Tools for The Trade” program has been renewed, and scholarships will be awarded for equipment and tools in the various disciplines. These were the nomination announcements drawing cheers from fellow students. The winners of the scholarships will be announced in a couple of weeks. Congratulations to all of the nominees. You make us proud. 080506

The Beavers Celebration Rocks the Campus!
basketball CelebrationHail to the back-to-back conference champions! Hundreds turned out for the celebration of the basketball championship captured by the LATTC Beavers for the second year in a row. The players rode in a mini-parade from the LRC to the K-Mall where a crowd of several hundred had gathered to honor the conquering heroes. President Chip Chapdelaine welcomed the team and gave thanks to Coach Richard Wells for a job well done. Then ASO president Edwin Simpson gave each and every player and coach a specially-designed varsity jacket to commemorate this wonderful season. The players threw t-shirts to the Trade Tech students and staff and were cheered as they made their way to the stage. Player Nick Pacitti thanked everyone for the support and for being a community, and supportive of the team, which touched off another roar. He also said 28-5 the team’s record, was the best in school history. For a special group of scholar-athletes, this was a special day and one we hope they never forget.080430

LATTC Cosmetology Nails the Competition
photo: from left to right, May See Fung, Martha Montano, Marlene Arellano and Brenton RichardThe Los Angeles Trade-Technical College cosmetology department has established a reputation for being the very best in the state, both well-respected and well-prepared. Our students have done extremely well in competitions throughout the state. This month their skills dominated the 2008 Barristar Hair Show in Anaheim and the National Beauty Forum.

In the total team competition, LATTC placed first. Brenton Richard won a first place in hairstyling team competition. May See Fung won a first place in the make-up team competition. Martha Montano captured third place in the nail art team competition. The Master Teacher Award Plaque was also presented to the LATTC full-time Faculty for excellence in the Cosmetology Department. This team of students has a long list of accomplishments. Brenton Richard has competed in most cosmetology contests offered in Southern California and has even traveled to Atlanta, placing first in haircutting and hairstyling in most of the competitions he has entered. He has spent hours after school and on weekends honing his skills and preparing for his contests. May See Fung participated in her first competition winning a first place in the make-up category. She is equally accomplished in all aspects of cosmetology. She excels academically and has contributed to many special projects in the department. Martha Montano has competed several times in nails and has come away with a deserving win. She has put in many hours designing nail creations that are truly works of art. Marlene Arellano is currently enrolled as a freshman cosmetology student. Marlene was the model for this year's team and contributed greatly to its success.

Congratulations to our cosmetology students! 080429

LATTC's Marketing Captures State Honors
photo: Joe Messinger, photographer and David Ysais, LATTC Director of Marketing and Public Relations display awards. Those in attendance said over and over again, that it has never happened before. Those attending the California Community College Public Relations Organization conference says no college has dominated its statewide awards in their first year of entry. But that's what happened last week. Los Angeles Trade-Technical College came away with an unprecedented EIGHT statewide awards including two first, three seconds and three thirds. The first place honors were given for Trade Tech's Radio PSA and also fittingly, Trade Tech was given the Charles Cropsey Photography Award for the best photo for any college publication. Our “Nails in Welding” which graces the president's conference room was taken by Joe Messinger and with his impending retirement, it is a fitting tribute to a man who has contributed a whole lot to this college. Other awards included TV PSA, video promotion, internal newsletter, feature article, direct mailer and the low budget wonder. Trade Tech photo: "Nails in Welding"captured more marketing awards than ANY other college in Southern California, (take that Santa Monica, Mt. SAC and Chaffey) and re-established Los Angeles Trade-Technical College as a place on the move. I'd like to thank Joe Messinger and my assistant Roxanne for helping make us a leader in marketing among community colleges, and I'd also like to thank the Marketing Committee for their wonderful guidance and suggestions. These are accomplishments built by the hard work of the people who work at and attend this college, I'm just lucky enough to be given the job of packaging them. 080429

Melena Loves to Bake Cookies
Melena Herrera, a 4th semester Professional Baking student is profoundly deaf but that doesn't stop her when it comes to whipping up a batch of tasty cookies. When 70 deaf/hard of hearing students from Marleton School for the Deaf, Riverside School for the Deaf, and Fairfax High school toured Trade Tech recently, Melena was prepared with purple and gold “I Love you” cookie treats for the visitors. The cookies were made in the shape of the American Sign Language symbol meaning “I love you.” There were smiles all around as she talked about the baking program with multiple sign language interpreters helping out. She discussed how the program helps students succeed in their goals and opportunities for future employment available to both hearing and deaf students. Melena ended the presentation by showing the students her portfolio.

Polish Film Highlights LATTC Festival
Marek Probosz speks about the Death of Captain Pilecki,“The Death of Captain Pilecki” is a difficult story to watch. The film is about Witold Pilecki, a Polish hero who sacrificed his life for his belief that Poland should be a free country. It is an emotionally-charged drama, a stark look at a man who refused to bend to political pressure. The film stars actor Marek Probosz as Pilecki in a portrayal that brings real life to this historical figure. The movie was the highlight of the Los Angeles Trade Technical College Language Arts and Humanities Foreign Film Festival coordinated by Dr. Rodrigo Palacios. The film has been screened just a few times in the United States and has captured awards for its portrayal of Pilecki and the former Polish regime. LATTC was extremely fortunate that Probosz himself attended the LATTC screening and talked about the filming, his role and the place that Pilecki now occupies in Polish history. Probosz says the film was completed on a very small $200,000 budget, and was shot in the same prison that Pilecki was held. More than 250 people watched the screening in the LATTC Grand Theater and then were treated to a question-and-answer session with Probosz. He talked about the role and the importance of the film. There were many Trade Tech students on hand for the screening as well as members of the Polish community in Los Angeles . The cultural consul from the Polish consulate also attended. It was a great mix of cultural arts and education right here on this campus! 080421
