Melena Loves to Bake Cookies
Melena Herrera, a 4th semester Professional Baking student is profoundly deaf but that doesn't stop her when it comes to whipping up a batch of tasty cookies. When 70 deaf/hard of hearing students from Marleton School for the Deaf, Riverside School for the Deaf, and Fairfax High school toured Trade Tech recently, Melena was prepared with purple and gold “I Love you” cookie treats for the visitors. The cookies were made in the shape of the American Sign Language symbol meaning “I love you.” There were smiles all around as she talked about the baking program with multiple sign language interpreters helping out. She discussed how the program helps students succeed in their goals and opportunities for future employment available to both hearing and deaf students. Melena ended the presentation by showing the students her portfolio.
