Beavers Come Up Short in State Championship
The Beavers were so very close to reaching the top of the community college championship basketball tournament in Stockton. After qualifying for the tournament with two superb efforts in beating Cerritos and Irvine Valley, the Beavers opened Friday, March 14th with a contest versus Fresno City College. They blasted Fresno 106-95 and entered Saturday's semifinal against Citrus College, the top-ranked team in the state, which had just one loss all year. Even though they led by nine at halftime, the Beavers could not hold off the Owls in the second half. Citrus was able to knock down some three-pointers in the second half and eventually won the game 97-83. Citrus then clobbered Fullerton on Sunday, to claim the CCCAA championship. One reporter from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune described the Trade Tech-Citrus semifinal as the “real championship”. Despite the loss, the Beavers made history, winning back-to-back conference titles and getting to the state tournament for the first time since 1992. Our players, our coach Richard Wells and his staff need to be congratulated. We are planning a celebration for the team in a couple of weeks. Make sure you come out to thank your team for a truly remarkable season! 080317 |
