Trade Tech Hosts AB540 Conference
Los Angeles Trade-Technical College took a leadership role in presenting the first AB 540 Conference on a college campus in Southern California. The focus was to bring experts to discuss the law and the opportunities it offers for all immigrant communities. More than 100 attendees jammed the Trade Tech cafeteria and listened to speakers such as Ricardo Lara, currently an aide to Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez and formerly the aide for the late legislator Marco Firebaugh, who actually introduced the bill. Lara talked about its origins and the struggles necessary to get it passed. There were wonderful personal testimonials from Trade Tech graduates like Jackie Guzman now a transfer student at CSUN where she started an AB 540 group. Roberto Mancia, instructor, English gave a moving speech about his flight from death squads in El Salvador to a new life in this country and how Trade Tech played a role in his success. Attendees were given bags filled with information about AB 540 which allows a non-resident to pay the resident's tuition rate at a California public college if they have attended a high school in California for three years, received a diploma or GED and are in the process of securing their citizenship. The event was capped off with Lara promising to secure funding from Nunez' office, to hold more such conferences at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College , which he called a leader on this issue. 070627 |
