What is a Federal Pell Grant?
Pell Grants are awarded solely on demonstrated financial need to every eligible undergraduate student who hasn't already earned a bachelor's or professional degree. Pell Grants don't need to be repaid. They can be used for tuition, fees, and living expenses, even at community college.
Pell Grants are usually a foundation of financial aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added.
How do I qualify?
When you file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you're automatically considered for a Pell Grant. To see if you're eligible, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the information you report when you apply. The formula produces an EFC number. Your Student Aid Report (SAR) contains this number in the upper right hand portion of page 1. This number will decide if you're eligible for a Pell Grant and for how much.
How much money can I get?
For the current school year, Pell Grants for full-time students range from $400 to $4050. The amount of your Pell Grant will depend on your financial need, your college costs, and whether you're attending college full time or part time.
You can receive only one Pell Grant in an award year, and you may not receive Pell Grant funds from more that one school at a time.
How will I be paid?
Pell Grant checks for Trade Tech students are mailed directly to the mailing address you have on file in the Admissions Office unless you are a non-resident student. If you are a non-resident student, the Pell Grant will be credited to your tuition account.
Pell Grant payments at Trade Tech are paid 4 times. You will get two payments during the Fall semester and two payments in the spring semester. The checks are mailed at the beginning and the middle of each semester.
You will not be paid for short term or late starting classes until the classes start. You may be paid for classes you take during the winter intersession or summer school if you do not use all of your Pell Grant during the fall and/or spring semesters.
Can I receive a Federal Pell Grant if I'm enrolled less than half time?
Yes, if you're otherwise eligible. You won't get as much as you would if you were enrolled full time but because you are taking less classes your expenses are not as high.
