Current Program
In support of the
curriculum, the Library delivers academic support for
the college. The Library provides students and faculty
with resources and access to information - both print
and electronic - in support of academic and vocational
programs. Since 1978 the Library has experienced a steady
decline in funding for both staff and library materials,
and as a result, delivery of library service has been
affected. The increasing use of new technology also
has caused major changes in how the Library delivers
services. There is a greater emphasis on computerized
library services, and the Library's present emphasis
is on the online book catalog and online research databases.
Personnel - The Library employs the
following personnel: three full-time faculty, four part-time
faculty, four full-time classified employees and two
student employees.
Equipment - The following items of equipment
are in need of repair or replacement: microfilm readers
and printers, a fax machine, several computers, and
the Library's book collection security system. The Library
is in immediate need of a server to connect all the
Library's CD-ROM applications, a receipt printer for
the circulation area and a pull-down screen for the
Library's projector.
Facilities - The infrastructure of the
Library's current facility is basically sound, but the
space is configured poorly and it is not wired for technology.
All book stacks and furnishings are out of date and
are not ADA-compliant.
Future Program
In the mid term (five years) new state
standards for library seating and computer workstation
space will create a need for a complete library renovation.
In the long term (ten years), with increased enrollment,
the Library must increase its collection and its area
for computerized research. In both the mid term and
the long term, the size of the Library program should
keep pace with college enrollment. ADA compliance, assistive
technologies and Information Competency requirements
need to be kept in mind as new facilities and equipment
are purchased.
Personnel - See Projected Faculty and
Staff Needs.
Equipment - Within the next five years,
the following items need to be replaced or purchased
new: all computers, additional computers and workstations,
advanced computer workstations, new book stacks, new
furniture for the periodicals section and a new circulation
counter.
Facilities - The Library needs an open
computer lab for student use. A Library Teaching Lab
has been mandated by the State and needs to be created
as soon as possible. The Reference collection needs
to be expanded and relocated with a new Reference station
and expanded area for periodicals. All furnishings and
areas should be ADA-compliant.
Staff Development - Desirable Student
Development topics include information technology, HTML
training, and DRA online training.
