Student Services
Current Program

The Los Angeles Trade-Technical College/AmeriCorps Early Childhood Education Literacy Program is a nonprofit organization that is part of the National Service Program of AmeriCorps Corporation designed to provide students of all ages and backgrounds with education awards in exchange for a year of service. The program has been in existence since August 2000. Students work with local schools and childcare centers to tutor children from low-income and limited English speaking families, preschool through fourth grade.

Personnel - At this time two full-time classified staff members and one student employee work for the program.

Equipment - At this time all equipment is operable with the exception of a laser jet printer, which needs repair. The office could use a desktop copier and a filing cabinet.

Facilities - The office's current location in the LRC Building is not ideal, as it should be located closer to other Student Services areas. The space is too small for three people, and the ventilation and temperature control are inadequate.

Future Program

This program is funded by grants from the federal government, and there is a possibility that it could be phased out if funding is cut. If funding continues, the program will likely need additional
staffing as more students enter the program, and in the mid term (five years) and in the long term (ten years), the program is expected to increase in size at the same rate as the overall college enrollment.

Personnel - See Projected Faculty and Staff Needs.

Equipment - In the mid term, the printer in need of repair needs to be replaced, and a minimum of three new computers and a new color printer will be needed. A computer/copier table, two or three filing cabinets and desks and chairs to accommodate a staff of six are needed.

Facilities - Within five years the following facilities will be needed: private spaces for the program director and the program counselor, a reception/intake area and office space to accommodate a staff of six.

Staff Development - Ongoing seminars in customer service skills and job enrichment are needed.
