Current Program

The Apprenticeship program is a state-approved and formalized industrial plan for training skilled workers. There are two primary parts to the training of an apprentice: on-the-job training and instruction and in-school training in technical subjects related to on-the-job training. Apprentices may petition to receive credit in the appropriate major toward an Associate in Art or Associate in Science degree for all courses successfully completed. A Certificate of Completion may be awarded when students have successfully completed all apprenticeship courses in their discipline. Most of the components that make up the Apprenticeship program take place off-campus in lab and lecture facilities furnished by employers and others. Cooperative Work Experience Education (CWEE) combines on-the-job experience with regular classroom instruction. It is designed to expand skills and knowledge and to improve self-understanding by integrating classroom study with planned supervised work experience. Classes meet the first eight weeks of a session, then all instruction is at the job site.

Degrees and Certificates - Degrees or certificates may be earned in the appropriate area major upon completion of an apprenticeship program.

Personnel - All program instructors are part-time.

Teaching Methodologies - Lecture and lab are the teaching methods most used in the Apprenticeship program, with work experience provided in the field for students enrolled in CWEE.

Technology - No online or distance learning technologies are used in the program.

Equipment - Equipment needed is supplied in almost all cases by the trainers or employers

Facilities - The In almost all cases employers provide training facilities. One large classroom on campus is used eight hours a week for the first eight weeks of a session. Facilities in all cases are adequate.

Future Program

No great expansion or change in the Apprenticeship program is anticipated, and enrollment in both programs is expected to remain level. See Program Projections.
Degrees and Certificates - No changes in degrees or certificates are planned.

Personnel - See Projected Faculty and Staff Needs.

Teaching Methodologies - No change in teaching methods is expected.

Technology - No alternative delivery systems are expected to be used, as the program relies mostly on employers providing training and facilities.

Equipment - No equipment needs have been identified at this time.

Facilities - No additional facility needs have been identified.

Staff Development - Activities that would be beneficial to staff include training in record keeping and computer applications such as PowerPoint and CAD-CAM.
