Current Program

The college district contracts with the Los Angeles County Sherrif's Department for police and safety services. The Sheriff Station, formerly the College Police, is responsible for the safety of college property, students and faculty, and compiles and publishes crime statistics. Department employees make arrests and document crimes for potential prosecution through the City Attorney's Office and the District Attorney's Office. Services include crime prevention and reporting, covering emergencies, providing an escort service, handling lost and found items, parking, and providing emergency information.

Personnel - The contracted department consists of a Bonus Deputy in charge, a Deputy and 11 Security Officers. The Deputies are the only sworn officers. In addition, there are three district classified employees and nine student employees.

Equipment - There is one police cruiser, a pick-up truck, an electric car (with another one ordered) and bicycles. The following office items need to be replaced: four desks, one file cabinet, one computer, one copier and one chair. A wall-mounted bike rack for patrol bikes is needed.

Facilities -The current office is small and inadequate for current operations.

Future Program

In both the mid term (five years) and long term (ten years), it is expected that the department will increase in size as enrollment increases, due to additional security and parking enforcement needs.

Personnel - See Projected Faculty and Staff Needs.

Equipment - Within five years a new typewriter and five chairs will be needed and the copy machine will need to be replaced.

Facilities - The Sheriff Station needs to be remodeled to include a larger reception area with bullet-proof glass for the front lobby, more parking for staff and visitor vehicles, more space for staff including lockers, a report writing room (with three computer stations) and a briefing room (conference style) with at least eight stations. The Sheriff's sub station is scheduled to be relocated with Proposition A funding.

Staff Development - The Sheriff's Department provides mandatory in-service training. In addition, the Bonus Deputy holds in-service training for staff, and the dispatchers (student workers) are monitored and trained.
