Current Program
Management Information Systems (MIS)
designs, maintains and upgrades the college's campus-wide
computer and network systems. The department, which
is one of the largest in the district, supports e-mail
servers, web serves, file servers, print servers, switches,
routers and cables. It installs and maintains network
software including system upgrades, helps train faculty
and staff, maintains all software license usage, evaluates
hardware and software technologies, and develops, implements
and enforces security for the network. In recent
years, as personal computers have become affordable,
the number of PCs on campus has increased and the quantity
and variety of software have increased. Also, as technology
has become more recognized as a teaching tool, computers
have moved into more classroom instruction areas than
ever before. These factors, along with the introduction
of new class scheduling, budget, student identification
and parking programs, have placed increasing demands
on the MIS department, which in response has hired additional
staff and even outsourced some information technology
services.
Personnel - At this time the department
employs six full-time classified staff members, a short-term
classified employee and two student workers.
Equipment - Tool kits, a network diagnostic
kit, a cable repair kit, a door lock, and two servers
need to be replaced. A layer 3 switch need to be upgraded.
Facilities - The department's operating
spaces were recently remodeled and are adequate for
operations. Storage space is badly needed.
Future Program
With recent growth in the use of technology,
and in anticipation of continued growth, the number
of personnel needed to maintain the college's computer
systems will increase both in the mid term (five years)
and in the long term (ten years) at a rate faster than
overall college enrollment.
Personnel - See Projected Faculty and
Staff Needs.
Equipment - Several servers, routers
and switches will need to be replaced within five years,
and ten new servers and a new computer network security
system are needed during the same period to prevent
unauthorized system access. Within ten years ten computers
will need to be replaced.
Facilities - Additional space for storage
is needed now and the problem will only worsen as time
goes by. As staff members are added, additional office
space will be needed.
Staff Development - Ever-changing technologies
require ever-changing technical education. Suggested
areas of instruction include Windows Operating System,
S.A.P., Novell Nerware, Microsoft Office and Exchange
E-mail systems.
