Current Program
The college is a member of the South
Coast Conference. Sports offered in the fall include
water polo, swimming, cross country and basketball,
all for both men and women. In the spring, the college
offers track and field for both men and women. The college's
athletic program reflects the goals of the college's
Mission Statement, with the addition that the program
also promotes student success in physical well-being.
Students participate in Athletics at a variety of levels
and in a variety of programs for personal enrichment
and as they prepare for transfer. In recent years several
factors have affected the program, including changes
in student population, economic conditions and college
budget conditions.
Personnel - At this time there are four
full-time faculty (a director, a men's basketball head
coach, a men's cross country and track head coach, and
a men's water polo and swimming coach), seven part-time
faculty, four full-time classified staff members and
two student workers in Athletics/Physical Education.
Equipment - The diving boards, the gym
floor and the public address system are all in need
of repair, and the gym and lockers rooms need to be
replaced. These repairs are slated to be addressed by
Proposition A funds, and an architect has already been
selected for the project. The program needs at least
three travel vans.
Facilities - In general, more space
is needed for offices, storage and meetings (at this
time some storage and equipment rooms are being pressed
into service as offices). Proposition A funds should
address most of these concerns.
Future Program
Athletics will face changes in the next
ten years in technology, student recruitment strategies,
facilities needs and in curriculum development. In the
mid term (five years) student participation in Athletics
is expected to increase at the same rate as overall
college enrollment. If funding is available, new sports
such as men's and women's soccer, football and golf
could be offered.
Personnel - See Projected Faculty and
Staff Needs.
Equipment - More high-tech equipment
will be needed in future years as it becomes standard
in Athletics programs. Within five years the college
will need to replace washing machines and dryers used
in the program, as well as TV/VCR and copy machines
and other office and computer equipment for use by staff
and coaches.
Facilities - In the mid term (five years)
more space for offices, storage and meetings is needed.
Staff Development - Seminars are needed
to provide information on athletic eligibility, financial
aid for students, audio-visual media equipment, gender
equity, general computer information, and first aid/CPR.
