FAQs about Tech Review:

Q. What exactly is Tech Review?

Tech Review is step one in our faculty driven process of curriculum development. Once a faculty member has created a course outline, he or she will need to get it approved by the LATTC Curriculum Committee. Tech Review is the peer review process that helps faculty ensure that the technical requirements of course outlines are met, so that it's ready to go when it gets to the Curriculum Committee.

Q. What's the difference between Tech Review and the Curriculum Committee ? Why do I have to go to both?

The tech review process is a peer review process, which is in place to help faculty proofread and clarify their outlines prior to request for approval. The Curriculum Committee is a sub committee of the Senate and one of the mandatory AB1725 areas where we, as faculty, come together to focus on the larger pedagogical issues of course content and its relation to the stated missions of discipline, department and campus. These two steps work in concert to expedite the on-campus approval process, so that things flow smoothly at the District level.

Q. Was this process always called Tech Review?

No, in previous years LATTC Curriculum Committee called this process Agenda Review. Most campuses in our District and elsewhere in the state call it Tech Review. The change was made so the purpose of the committee would be clearer.

Q. I've completed a course outline. Does it need to go to Tech Review?

A. Yes. A course cannot be placed on the Curriculum Committee agenda unless it has gone through the Tech Review process.

Q. Okay, my colleagues and I want to update all the course outlines in our department right away. What should we do ?

The Tech Review committee can review up to 20 course outlines at each meeting, based on the number of reviewers available. As of Fall 2007, there are seven standing members of the committee available to review courses, and agreement was reached to limit ask each department/discipline to submit no more than 3 course outlines per session. This allows the committee's limited human resources to be fairly distributed among all departments of the campus.

The Tech Review committee is made up of your hard-working peers who volunteer their time. There is no release time provided to them, this is their service to the campus community. We're always looking for new members; if you want to get involved, please contact the curriculum chair.

Q. What if I have more than three course outlines I'd like reviewed?

Please submit them!! If there are vacant spots , we'll be happy to review them. But even if there isn't space at this meeting, you will be the first on the list for the next.

Q. How do I submit course outlines for Tech Review?

Please submit course outlines to the curriculum chair, Deirdre Wood, via email at woodd@lattc.edu by 4:00 p.m. on the Tech Review submission deadline date. A table of dates for Spring 2008 is at the bottom of this FAQ. When submitting, please CC your department chair as well.

Q. What happens next?

A. Your course outline will be reviewed by both the Curriculum Chair and at least one member of the tech review committee. Please carefully proofread your course outline for completeness, clarity, grammar and spelling. Time restraints do not allow the Tech Review committee to function as an editing group, and no one on the committee enjoys returning a course outline because of too many errors.

Q. What do I need to check for before I submit?

  • Is it on the proper form(s) ? Do you have all the forms you need for what you want to do? You will *always* need a Course Outline. Depending on what else you want to do, you *may* need pre- or co-requisite forms, a Distance Ed approval form, or an Advance Course Status form. If you have questions, please consult the Chair.
  • Have you thoroughly proofread , both for spelling and formatting? Do outcomes line up with activities? Do the total number of classroom and lab hours add up? Are all required boxes filled in?
  • Are the catalog and schedule descriptions clear ? Remember, this is how your course will be presented to the public, so it should be clear, accurate and concise. The catalog description should be limited to 2-4 sentences; the schedule description should be one short sentence.

Q. Okay, I think I've really proofread this and this is my best work. After the Tech Reviewers have looked at it, what happens?

The Tech Reviewers return the course outline to the Curriculum Chair with one of three recommendations:

1. Minor corrections needed –You don't need to attend the Tech Review meeting, but you do need to make any requested changes and re-submit electronic copy to the curriculum chair by the date listed on the schedule below.

2. Corrections needed and/or committee members have questions . You will need to attend the Tech Review committee meeting and bring hard copies (2) of your document.

3. Major corrections needed . Your document isn't yet ready for Tech Review. Hard copy with notations of missing elements will be returned to you for modification. When you've made these changes, re-submit to the curriculum chair.

The curriculum chair will let you know by email what the Tech Review committee recommended.

Q. What happens after Tech Review?

Make any requested changes and submit a revised copy to the curriculum chair by the deadline for revised submissions. Please heed the deadline, otherwise your outline will have to wait until the next meeting!

Q. Who are the Tech Reviewers?

The Curriculum Committee Chair and Articulation Officer, Deirdre Wood and Associate Dean of Curriculum, Bobbi Kimble. Plus your faculty colleagues: Bill Elarton, Construction Technologies; John Glavan, Speech Communication; Phillip Huld, Anthropology; Lisa Moreno, English; Glecy Rosario, Counseling. Linda Delzeit reviews courses that are requesting Distance Ed certification. Please thank your colleagues. This committee could not function without their volunteering to review numerous 20 page course outlines each month.
