The
No Child Left
Behind Act
was signed into
law in 2002 to address the challenges of a modern multicultural society,
where access to educational programs − such as after-school programs −
can spell the difference in the success of any child in the future.
The Search Institute, a non-profit
organization engaged in providing resources, leadership, and information
for community and youth development, lists
40 Developmental
Assets for each growth stage
from infancy to adolescence. Classified into internal and external
types, these assets include support, empowerment, boundaries and
expectations, constructive use of time, commitment to learning, and
positive values, among others.
With quality education being the key
to having "no child left behind," the 21st Century Program is
committed to a community learning and team-building experience that
incorporates the Search Institute's developmental model. By attending
classes at LATTC, the students will assimilate much needed practical and
critical thinking, social interaction, and leadership skills in an
inclusive and culturally diverse framework of a college campus. They
are provided with the required books and materials as well as bus tokens
to facilitate their participation.
The 21st Century Program strongly
believes in the power of the youth to effect positive changes in
society. All its activities are conducted based on the following values:
-
Empowerment
-
Integrity and commitment
-
Diversity and tolerance
-
Collaboration
-
Creativity
These values not only strengthen the
students' self-esteem but also enable them to bridge the cultural and
educational gaps in communities. Genuine learning fosters the true
meaning of citizenship.
The 21st Century Program aims to
inspire a passion for knowledge among the young learners so that they
will become positive role models in the community. Through education,
learners will self-actualize their part as leaders in the development
of a community.
