My warmest greetings!
Since its inception in May
2005, the 21st Century Program has become a fertile
setting for middle-school learners to develop their intellectual and
social skills. It is a fantastic opportunity for the participants to
gain a unique insight through first-hand experience
of college life. The wonderful response from our middle-school
partners is heartwarming and has exceeded our modest expectations.
Our students are within the
service area of Los Angeles Trade Technical College, which is just a
convenient walk or commute from the surrounding community. We have
already touched so many young lives in these few months and sparked an
interest in education among culturally diverse middle school children.
I am especially proud of the students from
Berendo Middle School, James A. Foshay Learning Center, Mid-City Magnet
Middle School, and Mt. Vernon Middle School. Many have decided to
continue with their after-school classes in the fall semester after
their completion of our inaugural summer program. We
are fast approaching critical mass as more and more learners choose to
participate in our wonderful program.
We aspire not only to make
the 21st Century Program a model in the whole Los
Angeles Community College District, but more importantly to impact the
lives of students positively and help them become self-motivated
individuals capable and worthy of achievements. Nevertheless, without the efforts of our Student
Ambassadors and staff, who tirelessly promote the 21st Century Program's
ideals, our present success will be incomplete.
Our greatest dream is to see
the 21st Century Program’s community of learners become
achievers and leaders of tomorrow. There is no impossible dream if we
all work hand in hand.
Most sincerely,
Dorothy Smith
Associate Dean of 21st Century Program
