Under the Magnolia Tree

Many changes--local and global--are taking place. Because of what is happening between the U.S., the United Nations, and Iraq, I asked students who they think is rightly in charge of our Global Village. I personally believe that peace, prosperity and stability in our Global Village--the world--are the goals of civilized and patriotic citizens of the world.

If any global problem arises, who should solve it, the United States, the United Nations, or other world organization(s)? Why do you think that organization would be most suitable one to solve our global problems?

I think that the United Nations is rightly in charge of our global village. The United States obviously has a big influence because of its economic status, but overall for peace and prosperity and stability, the UN should be in agreement on all issues.
Since the UN represents the most people, it can get the most input from people around the world about what global issues are needed, about what things should be changed. Since the UN is made up of many countries, it has a lot of influence and input from a lot of countries. This is better than having one country decide. The United States is good, but it is only one country.
Global issues don’t just affect the United States, they affect us all. The United Nations is a combination of various countries that can be affected. They should be involved in decisions too.
The United States has too much say in the United Nations, and basically a lot of countries are swayed by what the U.S. says. …When it comes to decisions in the world, the UN should be a committee, and not just led by a certain country. The UN should be more centralized than right-wing or left-wing, because a lot of organizations that are in the United Nations are just interest groups that serve the United States and countries with a lot of money. It should be more fair and equal; it should be an organization for all countries.
