CORRECTIONS
ABBREVIATED

Professor Stevens, English 21

You are required to make corrections to your paper using the following .  Bring it up “one” at a time; do not make a line at the front of the room, take turns. ALSO, DO NOT RECOPY YOUR PAPER:

  1. Indent: Start your paragraph in 10 to 12 spaces.

  2. VT:  Verb Tense,     verb usage is incorrect, “present to past” or “past to present.”  Need to use consistent verb  tense in paragraph.

  3. *:  Most likely you have used a helping verb when it is not necessary: One of the all-time worst offenders for creating unclear, wordy, indirect writing is the passive-voice construction. It's easy enough to convert a sentence from active voice to passive voice, and back again:  I would go Correction: I go or I went.

  4. SP:  Spelling, a word misspelled.  Need to correct spelling.

  5. RO:  Run-On, two sentences run together without any punctuation between them. Needs either a comma/coordinator or subordinator w/or without comma.

  6. CS:  Comma Splice, when two sentences are held together with a comma.  A comma cannot connect two
complete sentences.  Need to add a coordinator.

  7. ^   Insert a comma if the sentence begins with an introductory phrase or subordinate clause in the front.  Need to add a comma where the phrase or subordinate clause ends and the sentence begins.

  8. ^   Insert a comma if the sentence expands to the right, with a noun phrase, verb phrase, or an appositive.  Need to tack the phrase on with a comma.

  9. ^   Insert, indicates that you are missing a word, such as a helping verb, article, or just a word that will help the phrase or sentence make sense.  Need to insert a word or word.

  10. Frag:  Fragment, not a complete sentence.  You are missing a verb and/or noun or began a sentence with  a subordinator.  Need to insure you have a subject and verb in each sentence.

  11. NS:  No Space is necessary.  A single paragraph does not have any individual sentences.  The sentences come one after another.  Need to format the paragraph correctly.

  12. OP:  Over Punctuation, this punctuation is not necessary.  Need to omit the punctuation mark.

  13. WW:  Wrong Word, the word does not make sense where it is being used.  Need to change the word(s).

  14. O: A circled word, sometimes indicates a word that is not necessary, omit.  Need to omit the word(s).

  15. Agr:  Error in Agreement, both subject and verb should be plural or singular.  Or the noun should agree  with the article or determiner.  Need to insure that subjects and verbs agree.

  16. PN:   Pronoun Shift, a pronoun shift occurs when the subject shifts from “he to they” or “them to I,” etc.  Need to use the same voice throughout paragraph.

  17. Pl/SinPlural/Singular, again, this is confusion in use of “s” on nouns/verbs.  Need to add an “s” or omit an “s.”

  18. Series:  Words, phrases, or clauses connected together with and, but, or,so are not the same.  Need to make sure sure they are all nouns, verbs, etc.

  19.  _______  Sentence, phrase or word underlined, the item is not in “English,” most likely a translation or slang.
