COURSE OUTLINE:  BASKETBALL THEORY - PHYSICAL EDUCATION 500

 

DESCRIPTION:

 

This course will help the advanced basketball student to acquire more depth  and breath of the various offensive and defensive theories in the sport of basketball.  Analysis of strategies and outcomes will be emphasized.

OBJECTIVES:

 

  1. Identify various offensive strategies in advanced basketball.
  2. Analyze various defensive strategies in advanced basketball.
  3. Demonstrate the importance of fundamentals as it relates to basketball.
  4. Explain strategies for competition preparation with emphasis on the collegiate level.
  5. Demonstrate proper conditioning techniques that are basketball specific.
  6. Identify skills for becoming an assistant coach or manger.
  7. Apply the ethics of good sportsmanship, officiating, and legal aspects.

Appropriate writing assignments, symbolic manipulation, or skills demonstration.

1.       The student will be able to analyze and course differentiate basketball techniques for workouts.

2.      They will be able to participate and compete in official basketball competitions, displaying good sportsmanship and conduct.

 

3.    After competition, the students will evaluate how the rules and strategy affect

 the outcome of the team.

WEEK 2:        Coaching Philosophy and Methods

                         Video – “Hoop Dreams”

 

WEEK 3:        Role of Assistant Coaches and Managerial staff

                        Video – “Hoop Dreams”

 

WEEK 4-7:     (MID-TERM EXAM)

Individual fundamentals and their importance to team offense:              Passing-shooting, Catching

 

WEEK 8-10:   Offense Overview; including offense without the ball.

                        Video – “Soul in the Hole”

 

WEEK 11-12: Introduction to Defense theory, Individual Defense Skills,                            

                         Close outs, Taking Charge, Playing Ball Screening

                         Video - “Soul in the Hole”               

 

WEEK 13:      Competition Preparation, Practice Coaching

                        Video – “Soul in the Hole”

 

WEEK 14:      Ethics of Officiating, Coaching and Legal Aspects of the Sport

 

WEEK 15:      REVIEW FOR FINAL EXAM - FINAL EXAM

 

 

FINAL GRADE:

Tests = 60%

Lab   = 40%
