Welcome to the Learning Skills Center at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College.  The Learning Skills Center is the home of the new Learning Skills and English as a Second Language (ESL) Department and the Teaching and Learning Support Services Department.  Our mission is to provide academic instruction and support services in a caring environment to help students to be successful in their classes and stay in school.  The Learning Skills Center focuses on responding to the individual needs of students and provides courses, tutoring, computer access, and instructional resources to all students to help ensure success in their academic, career, and personal goals.  If there is a need for classes or services that are not currently offered, we will make every effort to design a learning program just for you.

Course introduces basic communication skills using the manual alphabet & American Sign Language to gain an understanding of deafness & deaf culture.

Flexible Self-paced, Individualized Class:  In order to accommodate your busy lifestyle, we provide self-paced, individualized, computer-assisted instruction courses.  You work on your own and at your own speed, under the supervision of an instructor.  You must meet with an instructor regularly and complete written assignments.  These classes are open-entry, open-exit.  This means that the course’s start and end time varies with each student.

This course trains the tutor in tutoring techniques, group dynamics, interpersonal skills, record keeping, and organizational skills.  Problems inherent to tutoring are discussed and alternative solutions are offered.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - 2 English as a Second Language II: Integrated Skills – 12 Units

 

Recommended Prerequisite:  Successful completion of ESL 1 with a grade of “C” or better or placement process.

Course covers basic speaking, listening, and grammar, and high-beginning level reading, and pre-paragraph writing of strings of five to ten sentences.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - 3A Writing and Grammar CR/NCR NDA – 6 Units

 

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of ESL 2 with a grade of “C” or better or placement process.

This low intermediate course covers basic sentence writing, which includes spelling, punctuation and grammar.  Students are also introduced to narrative, descriptive and process paragraph writing and learn to write personal and business letters.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - 3B Reading and Vocabulary CR/NCR NDA – 3 Units

 

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of ESL 2 with a grade of “C” or better or placement process. 

ESL 3B teaches and reviews English reading skills including previewing, skimming, scanning, main idea identification, basic dictionary skills, and vocabulary, including vocabulary in context.
