Stand Alone Courses

All new courses must receive state approval before they can be offered.  Certain types of courses have been given blanket approval and do NOT need state approval.  The following courses have this blanket approval:

  1. Courses that are required or recommended as part of a state-approved program.  All programs listed in our catalog (except those noted as "pending") are state-approved.
  2. Courses which will be submitted to CSU or UC for approval and the college is "reasonably confident" that it will be accepted.
  3. Courses in vocational TOP codes, when the college has fewer than 12 units in that TOP code.
  4. Courses taught in cooperative education.
  5. Experimental courses (99 numbered courses), special topics, and independent study.
  6. Mandated public safety training courses, for peace officers, fire personnel, etc.

At Trade Tech we place ALL new vocational courses on a program's list of recommended electives, and all degree-applicable, non-vocational courses in the Liberal Arts major (unless a course will fit in another approved academic major).  All other new courses will need the Stand Alone form (MS Word or PDF).  So which courses must have this form?  Generally, this means basic skills -- all courses in Learning Skills, Developmental Communications, ESL, and low-level English and Math.
