Puente Program

The Puente Project will prepare students to successfully transfer to four-year colleges and universities and return as role models in the community.

Writing - Puente English Instructor (Roberto Mancia)

  • Puente students will evaluate, summarize, and interpret multicultural literature
  • Puente students will produce well-developed essays that bring assigned readings together with personal observations
  • Puente students will produce extensive research papers where they demonstrate knowledge of MLA guidelines
  • Puente students will show compentency in critical thinking

Counseling - Puente Counselor (Ashraf Hosseni)

  • Puente students will develop educational plans that will meet requiremnents for transfer
  • Puente students will compare majors offered at different four-year colleges and universities
  • Puente students will identify financial/academic/community resources that will better prepare them for transfer
  • Puente students will develop their coping skills when discussing personal hardship during counseling sessions

Personal Development

  • Puente students will develop a greater sense of personal and cultural identity
  • Puente students will design life plans with short-term and long-term goals
  • Puente students will demonstrate understanding of transfer requirements for different four-year colleges and univeristies
  • Puente students will apply transfer terminology when developing educational plans
  • Puente students will follow a holistic approach to education and enhance self-awareness

Mentoring

  • Puente students will develop a professional relationship with a Puente mentor - a role model in he community who shares students' academic and professional interests and who will guide, support, and advise them during their educational journey
  • Puente students will compose a written report about their mentors and present it to his or her peers
  • Puente students will develop a greater understanding of what it means to be a role model which will lead to them serving in the community as future mentors once they achieve a college degree
