US Federation of Worker Cooperatives Make a Big Splash

Posted by Global Administrator

“U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives Makes a Big Splash”

The national worker cooperative movement held a conference over the weekend that brought together over 450 members and leaders in what was billed as the largest U.S. convening of worker cooperatives ever. Employee-owned business ventures have been on the rise, as alternative business models have been on the rise. The array of cooperative efforts that came together from all over the country celebrated the decades of success of some of their best efforts, compared strategies and supported numerous start-ups as formation. The local co-op efforts sponsored a welcome reception on Thursday evening at the home of Gilda Haas, the founder of the Co-op Lab, that is teaching a contract education class in worker cooperatives at LATTC this fall as a possible pilot of a credit or non-credit class. It is within our Community Planning Program (supported by CD Tech), under Labor Studies, within our Business and Civic Engagement Pathway. Over forty students are enrolled from various co-op efforts throughout the county, into 9 self-managed teams, with support from members of the L.A. Coop Lab and the Climate Justice Alliance, a co-op attorney, and a member of the well-respected Arizmendi Support Collective. The national conference opened on Friday morning with visits to co-op sites in L.A. and a pre-conference on Unions and Cooperatives Working Together, which has spawned a number of successful worker coops when businesses shut their doors. The main conference kicked off in the South Tent on Friday evening, and continued all-day Saturday and Sunday. Huge thanks to our Events Team, AV and facilities for hosting.”
