President’s Weekly Message 11-26-18 PDF President’s Weekly Message 11-26-18 Preview

Good Monday morning to you, November 26th, 2018—

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday and got the chance to spend some time with those important in your life. We are just three weeks away from the end of the Fall 2018 semester, and we want you to do well in your classes. Please do take advantage of our tutoring supports in Academic Connections on the first floor of Mariposa Hall.

Right now, is the time to register for your classes for both the Winter session and Spring semester. Make sure you visit your student portal and check with your pathway counselor about educational plan. Don’t wait, classes fill up so please get enrolled as soon as possible.

The Poetry Club has organized the Second Annual Poetry Slam on Tuesday afternoon from 1:30-3pm, in the Library, to the right of the Circulation Desk. Thank you to student Amara Jackson for providing so much of the organizing behind this event, along with the faculty advisors from the Library and the English Department. While you are there, check out the amazing mural on Communication: from Cave Paintings to Computers, from Visual Communications Department student, Fernando Marticorena, supported by faculty member Cesar Rodriguez and Alumnus Gary Nava. And check out the Culinary Arts Pathway Exhibit highlighting a Professional Baking Class Display. ALL ARE WELCOME

I have to give a shout-out to those students from the Associated Students Organization (ASO) and the Inter-Club Council (ICC) who put together an extremely successful Thanksgiving feast and clothes giveaway on campus. There were many boxes of donated clothes, shoes, toiletries and canned goods distributed to students. In addition, a great Thanksgiving meal was served to those in attendance.

Also, I have to mention our students from the Culinary Arts and Baking Club who delivered toiletries and other items to the homeless in and around downtown LA.  Our students have a lot of heart.

Earliest this year LATTC’s Design and Media Arts (DMA) Pathway was invited to join in a competition to choose urban designers for Nike’s “Diversity by Design” Apprenticeship Program. Nine days ago, after a full application process, 52 students from a variety of colleges joined in a competition like an NFL Combine. This broad competition led to 12 students being invited to Nike’s celebrated campus just outside Portland, Oregon where they will spend 6 months, all expenses paid to possibly land full-time jobs as designers with an historic employer in their field. Of the 12 slots, 9 are going to LATTC DMA students. They are: Christy Armendariz, McKinley Bonner, Ndeyfatou Ceesay, Sean Cobb, Charles Green, Taylor Kim, Indah Nur, Aracely Quitana and Sami Sanchez. Two additional LATTC students have been selected as alternates. This is an incredible opportunity and we are so proud of our students. We plan to celebrate their success at our upcoming Gold Thimble Runway show.

This semester’s Gold Thimble fashion show will be amazing. It will take place on Friday, December 7th at 7pm, in the South Tent. Our talented fashion design students will present their designs under the title line “Sister Cities: Los Angeles and Mexico City.” Next year is the 50th anniversary of the “Sister City” relationship between L.A. and Mexico City and our college is working with a cooperative of indigenous women from the various states in Mexico in the capitol on indigenous designs and fabrics which will be incorporated into the title line. Two winners will be selected to travel to the cooperative in Mexico City and their co-design works for a runway show there in March, which they will also attend. Come on out and support your classmates. Tickets are $10 in advance in the DMA Pathway Office and $15 at the door. It is one of the best date nights or family nights in L.A. Come on out.

If you or someone you know, needs the latest information on expungement of your record, make sure that they know about our upcoming expungement clinic. Get the latest info right here on campus at the Work Source Center in the Bradley Center for Student Life. It will be on Friday December 7th from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

As we roll toward the end of the Fall semester, I encourage you to keep working hard in your classes and focus on those upcoming finals. Let us know if you need help, because we can provide resources for you. And don’t forget to register in classes for Winter and Spring.
