Weekly Message 11-19-2018 PDF
Weekly Message 11-19-2018 Preview

Good Monday morning to you, November 19th, 2018—

This is Thanksgiving week. I hope the holiday allows you to spend some time with your family and friends, and re-energizes you as we move toward the final weeks of the Fall 2018 semester. We also want you to start thinking about enrolling in classes for Winter 2019 and Spring 2019, if you have not already done so. So just as a reminder, there will be NO classes from Thursday through Sunday of this week, and the campus will be closed.

I’ll start by mentioning an historic win for your classmates, our student-athletes. Our LA Trade Tech men’s basketball won the Saddleback Tournament championship this past weekend, for the first time ever. Congratulations to our players and coaches for starting the season with a truly impressive tournament win. And this follows the women’s team capturing the Cosumnes River Tournament championship last weekend. Get ready for what promises to be a fun Beaver basketball season.

On Tuesday from 11-12:30pm, five local individuals including, one of our students, will be performing their play in K-126. You are officially invited to be there. The performers are from the Dad’s Back Academy, connected to Friends
Outside which has a presence in our WorkSource Center in the Tom Bradley Center for Student Life. The script was developed by the performers this past summer in a series of workshops which took place in K-126. These individuals have spent time incarcerated and have developed a play helping people understand what it was like to return, and return to their children. I will be there and you are officially invited to attend. Please come on by.

Our Design & Media Arts Pathway (DMA) has built an amazing partnership with Nike who is trying to bring urban designers into their company based just outside of Portland, Oregon. Almost one hundred of our DMA students submitted their portfolios and 30 of them were selected to participate in a Nike Combine (like the NFL comprehensive tryouts) this past Saturday involving a total of 52 students. It took place at Honeypot-LA, a creatives warehouse on 12th near Olive. The twelve winning designers (4 each in footwear, athletic wear, and digital design) will receive an expense-paid plus salaried experience at the Nike Campus in Oregon for six months, and hopefully land a job. We know we did well in the Combine, but we are waiting on the final results to see who was accepted. Good luck LATTC DMA!

We have our weekly Food Pantry partnership with St. Francis Center this Tuesday from 10:30am to 12:00 noon. It will take place in the K-Mall. Bring your student ID and receive free produce, food items and drinks.

Just after the Tuesday Food Pantry, the STEM Cub will be sponsoring one of the more interesting annual events of the year. The club is holding its Egg Drop competition. Everyone is eligible to put together an entry. You will need to create something surrounding the egg, as it gets tossed off the K-Mall bridge. Come on out and join in the competition or just watch the scientific test.

On Wednesday, the Performing Arts Club, the ASO and the Inter-Club Council will be holding its Thanksgiving Feast and Clothes and Food Giveaway. Our student leadership has orchestrated a collection of clothes and food and will be handing out these items to those who could use them. Come on by and join in this inspirational event. The giveaway starts at noon and the feast at 1:30pm.

I want to congratulate those students who made the Dean’s List. It is a fine example of student success. We honored the LATTC 2018 recipients last week at the Deans’ Awards, and we celebrate their accomplishment. Checkout our Facebook page for all of the photos.

The Performing Arts Club held its Fall talent show last week and I heard the performances were outstanding. I would like to thank all of the students who showcased their talents in art, photography, dance, singing and the spoken word. And as always, thank you for sharing your talents with your fellow students and the campus. Kudos to club advisors Mitchell Horn and Jearold Mock. Disbursements are still being made to eligible students. The Financial Aid office is on hand to assit you with any documentation that you may have outstanding. Every eligible student should have financial aid. If you have questions, please send an email to tfinaid@lattc.edu. Please visit either the Financial Aid Office (Juniper Hall, 1st floor) of the Financial Aid Resource Center (Juniper Hall, Room 314) Monday – Thursday: 8:00am – 7:00pm and Friday: 8:00am – 12:00pm.

Please enjoy the Thanksgiving holidays. Remember that the college will be closed from Thursday through Sunday. No classes. No services. We will be back on Monday, November 26th, as we start down the homestretch of the semester.

Best wishes-

Larry
