Good Monday morning to you, March 4th, 2019—

We are already into March and are moving deeper into the Spring semester with a lot of exciting things coming up on campus.

Right at the top of the list, is the run being made by the Lady Beavs basketball team. Our women’s team captured the South Coast Conference-North crown last week with a tough win over ELAC. This is the first time we have had a back-to-back conference champion in a long time. This past Saturday I got the chance to see them play a great game beating Mira Costa College 95-to-70 and moving on to the round of 16 in the playoffs. This Saturday night at Trade Tech, the Lady Beavs will host Mt. San Jacinto College for a berth in the state Elite Eight championships up in Ventura. The game will be at the Trade Tech gym. We need everyone to show up and support our women’s basketball. These scholar-athletes have done some amazing things this season, and the team has the chance to go a long way in the playoffs, seeded third in the state. Let’s get behind them. Please make your plans to be at the game on Saturday at 7pm.

This is a great opportunity to talk with our LACCD chancellor Dr. Francisco Rodriguez. He is an amazing leader and loves coming to Trade Tech. He will spend an hour with us, so make it a point to come and join in the discussion. The session is this Wednesday in the Magnolia Hall Atrium from 10:30-11:30am. You can catch the Undesign the Redline Exhibit telling the story of South L.A. which is right there while you are at it.

If you have an interest in moving onto a four-year university, you will have a chance to meet representatives from at least 20 universities during our campus Transfer Day. Make sure you stop by and learn more about what is available to you.

Our Student Health Center is paid for by your student health fee of $11 per semester and $7 for Winter and Summer sessions. It is open Monday to Thursday from 8am-6pm and operated by a great partner, the St. John’s Well Child and Family Center. They have nine respected Federally Qualified Health Clinics and three school-based clinics in Central and South L.A., and Compton. They are a non-profit that started their services 25 years ago at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Adams Blvd. between Flower and Figueroa. At Trade Tech’s Student Health Center in Mariposa Hall, Room 107a, you can receive over-the-counter pain relievers and First Aid, Family Planning, Preventative Healthcare, TB Skin Tests, Personal Therapy appointments, and much more. For what you cannot get at our Student Health Center, you can be referred directly across 23rd Street to their large St. John’s Clinic at 326 W. 23rd St., for primary care, secondary care, acute care, denti-care, and so much more. They can help you sign up for Medi-Cal, Obamacare, and, if ineligible and without means, they are a Free Clinic. Consider making the St. John’s Clinic your medical home and you will be surprised at the services available to you and your family.

I hope most of you follow us on social media, so maybe some of you have seen this already, but as we wrap up Black History Month, this story serves as a reminder of the importance of the education you are receiving here at LATTC.

Kitty Black Perkins is being celebrated as one of the pioneers in the development of Mattel’s very first black Barbie. It was Perkins who created the outfits and the look of the first black Barbie, and turned into a massively successful iconic toy. Guess where she received her design training? Yup, right here at LA Trade Tech’s fashion program. She came to Los Angeles on a visit, enrolled here and started winning fashion design awards. Please read her story by clicking on the link, and know that your education matters.

I want to clarify some information we placed in last week’s newsletter. We talked about LATTC students Cristian Alvarez, Tristan Fierros and Devin Ford being selected as part of the Mayor’s Young Ambassadors Program. The students will be traveling to Paris for two weeks in June with a group of twenty students who all successfully applied as a part of the LA College Promise program (LACP). This is a free travel abroad program for College Promise student applicants. All program expenses, including airfare, lodging, travelers insurance, and meals, are covered. Our three students will get to meet students from other countries and will meet with international government officials. Congratulations to our students and our LATTC staff who are doing a great job with the LACP. We will provide photos of all three students next week.

Trade Tech students continue to make us all proud on so many fronts. Thanks for all that you do.
