President’s Weekly Message 2-4-19 PDF President’s Weekly Message 2-4-19 Preview

Good Monday morning to you on February 4th, 2019 and welcome to the first day of the Spring 2019 semester!

We are very excited that you have selected LA Trade Tech to continue your higher education. This college has so much to offer and we want you to take advantage of it all. We know the first few days of the semester can be stressful and confusing, so let us help you with directions, answers and information. You can always stop by the Bridges to Success office in Mariposa Hall Room 105 or any of the info booths set up on campus, to ask any questions. You can always look for one of our deans…they will be wearing yellow jackets today.

If you still need to add classes, check the schedule below and attend that first session of class, so you can try to secure an add code from the instructor.

We expect it to be wet and rainy during the first two days of the week. We had planned some informational fairs out in the grass area (North Quad). But we will move some of those events to the lobby of Mariposa Hall if it’s raining hard. Make sure to stop in with any questions about student services.

Financial Aid is starting the Spring semester with a campaign to get as many of YOU to fill out the 2019-2020 FAFSA or Dream Act Application by the Priority Date Deadline of March 2nd.  Doing so guarantees that your financial aid will be packaged by the start of the Fall 2019 semester and automatically determines if students are eligible for the California Promise (formerly known as the BOG Fee Waiver). Look out for chances to win prizes by participating in raffles on campus throughout February for students who can show the email confirmation that they applied for the 2019-2020 FAFSA or Dream Act Application. For assistance head to the Financial Aid Resource Center located in Juniper Hall ST-314.

Please remember that the sheriff’s station will NOT be ticketing for the first two weeks for those vehicles without a parking permit. You have the first two weeks of the semester to buy your permit. You can do it in the business office. You may still be cited if you park illegally in the electric car spaces, designated disabled spaces or non-student spaces. The permits are $27 for preferred and $20 for regular permits, with ticketing beginning on February 19th, right after the Presidents’ Holiday.

We will be offering a Metro U-pass this Spring, so you can ride public transit (Metro plus several other transit agencies) at a significantly reduced rate. It is structured so that students can use their financial aid credit in the Bookstore to purchase the pass, or finance the pass through the Bookstore, or the U-Pass may be provided for free through L.A. College Promise, EOPS or UMOJA, if eligible. The cost for all others for Spring Semester is $120 covering now until 6/16/19, which is $6 per week, and it is prorated if you start the U-Pass later in the period. If you already have a U-Pass, that covers you through 2/24/19 and the new U-Pass covering through 6/16/19 is prorated to just $96. Metro and LATTC are working together on creating a new generation of transit users, and supporting your education at the same time.

LATTC is partnering with TruConnect and Lifeline to provide eligible students with a FREE wireless phone that comes preloaded with the LACCD and Grad Guru Apps.

TruConnect is a telecommunications company that offers wireless products and services to customers all over the United States.

The Lifeline Program was created as a way of helping low-income households gain access to a “lifeline” of communication and emergency services through home telephone service. Lifeline is available to consumers who can pro-vide documentation for eligibility based on their income level or participation in a public assistance program like SNAP, Medicaid, FPHA (Section 8), and others.

Starting on Thursday, February 7th, LA Trade Tech College will be hosting a remarkable exhibit in the Atrium of Magnolia Hall. The “Undesign the Redline” presentation will feature an historical account of “redlining,” the practice of refusing loans or resources to certain neighborhoods and individuals, deemed a poor financial risk. The exhibit will look at this practice in Los Angeles as well as nationwide, and how it has affected people. The fact that the exhibit will be here at LATTC is a meaningful moment for our campus. We will have visitors from the region to learn from the exhibit. This Thursday we will host a series of panel discussions and presentations to open the exhibit. Please take the time to come by on Thursday and visit the exhibit. There’s more info at the link below.

We are looking forward to a great semester, and we want to make sure you are achieving your educational goals. We will continue to focus our efforts on your success, to the best of our ability. Welcome to the new semester at LATTC.
