Good Tuesday morning to you, February 19th

I hope you had some restful time off and some enjoyable time with people you care about this past long weekend. We are now into our third week of the Spring semester and we hope that you are finding your stride in your classes.

Don’t forget that we have plenty of student services to help you succeed in your classes. First, work on choosing a Pathway, if you have not yet done so, to help you succeed here at LATTC. You can visit General Counseling on the second floor of Juniper Hall to get some help, visit our website to understand our Nine Pathways or check in with Bridges. You can also talk to other students on their choices, to staff and faculty for advice, or visit any of the offices of our nine Pathways. If you already know your Pathway of choice, make sure to meet your Pathway Counselor for advice and your Ed Plan.

As to our other Student Support Services, please look around the campus, especially in Mariposa Hall (Bridges to Success, Academic Connections/Tutoring, Vet Center, DSPS, Dream Resource Center, Puente, L.A. College Promise); Juniper Hall (Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, the Business Office & parking, Transfer Center, General Counseling, UMOJA, EOPS/Next Up, International Students Center, GAIN/Calworks, Project Impact); The Bradley Center for Student Life (formerly Redwood Hall-ASO, Student Clubs, The WorkSource Center, Foster-Kinship Care/Guardian Scholars) and Cedar Hall (the Bookstore and the U-Pass sales).

Free Money February is underway. The priority deadline for the 2019-2020 federal financial aid FAFSA application and California Dream Act application is March 1st.  Bring your email confirmation to the Financial Aid Resource Center located in Juniper Hall- ST 314 and be entered to win raffle prizes every Friday.  Prizes include t-shirts, meal tickets to the cafeteria, and bookstore vouchers.  Filling out your financial aid application by March 1st will ensure that your financial aid, including your California Promise (formerly BOG Fee Waiver) will be processed in time for the start of the Fall semester.

There are some legislative changes being made in English and Math based on AB705. We know some of you may be confused, so the English department worked with your student reps and created this video to explain the changes. Take a look by clicking the link, and we expect a math version soon.

If you need some guidance in learning Canvas, we are offering some workshops so you can become familiar with the system, or maybe to brush up on your access. Please take advantage of the opportunity.

We will be offering a Metro U-pass this Spring, so you can ride public transit at a significantly reduced rate. It is structured so that students can use their financial aid credit in the Bookstore to purchase the pass, or finance the pass through the bookstore, or the U-Pass can be purchased through EOPS or UMOJA if student is eligible. The cost is $8.25 per week on Metro and five other transit lines, so pro-rated for the remaining 18 weeks through June 16th, it is $148.

LA Trade Tech College is currently hosting a great exhibit. The Undesign the Redline presentation is being housed in the Atrium of Magnolia Hall and features an historical account of “redlining,” the practice of refusing home loans, reasonably priced home and car insurance or other resources to certain zipcodes representing neighborhoods and communities deemed a poor financial risk. This exhibit chronicles these practices particularly in South Los Angeles, and how it has affected these families and communities even now. Please take the time to come by and visit the exhibit. We are hosting a Day of Learning on Thursday from 1:15pm to 3pm so feel free to drop in. There’s more info at the link below.

…and finally, please keep an eye on our men’s and women’s basketball teams; both are having solid seasons. The men are battling to stay in the conference hunt, and they do have 17 wins overall. Now the women are tied for first place in the conference, as they seek back-to-back conference championships. They are in a real battle with ELAC to win the conference. They are just two wins away from clinching. Currently our Lady Beavs are ranked 3rd IN THE STATE! Let’s get out and support our teams.

Keep up the good work in your classes, and let us know how we can help you be successful.
