December 3, 2018

Good Monday morning to you, December 3rd, 2018—

Just one week left until finals and Winter Break. And we want to make sure you finish strong as you have already been giving your best effort in the classroom. Remember that we have some Jam Sessions and other resources available to you, so you can succeed in your classes.

Not only is it time to focus on the final few days of the semester, it’s time to register for Winter and Spring classes. Visit your PeopleSoft account and of course, you may want to check with your pathway counselor to see about the best class options for you. The Winter and Spring schedules are also available on line, so please take the time and select your classes.

The big event of the week is the Gold Thimble Fashion Show scheduled for this Friday in the South Tent. Not only will we celebrating the amazing designs by our graduating fashion students during a great runway show, but we also honor the nine Trade Tech students who have been selected for the inaugural Nike “Diversity by Design” Apprenticeship Program. The Trade Tech Nine will be leaving for Nike’s facility near Portland for a six-month intensive design internship, and the real possibility of building a career at this company. There will be plenty of our district supporters and community friends at the Gold Thimble, so if you get a chance, come on out and make it a special evening in support of your classmates. Also this year’s GT theme is “Sister Cities: Los Angeles and Mexico City” and the focus is on the indigenous fashions throughout Mexico. Two students from Trade Tech’s Gold Thimble class will be selected to travel to Mexico City to work with theDesign Center in Mexico and return to the capital to for a March Runway Show there. The fashion show starts at 7:00pm this Friday.

This Tuesday, Assembly member and former LACCD Trustee Miguel Santiago along with Mayor Eric Garcetti will join Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez on our campus for a news conference to push for the funding of the second year of the California College Promise. In effect, the funding would allow any student who received free tuition during the first year of the College Promise, to receive free tuition again for their second year at a community college. LACCD and LA Trade Tech were part of this program from its inception. The assembly member is asking that our LATTC College Promise students attend the news conference at 9:00am on Tuesday in the Magnolia Hall atrium. More on AB19.

The Performing Arts Club (PAC) is doing something special for our CDC children and children in the neighborhood. Our favorite Santa (the guy from facilities, not the North Pole) will be engaging the CDC children and taking photos this morning at 10:00am out in front of Mariposa Hall. And the PAC is still collecting new or gently used toys, which the members will distribute to neighborhood children. If you want to donate, you can bring it to Juniper Hall ST-533 by December 10th.

Also TODAY Monday, the RISE Club is holding its “Thank You Luncheon.” Club members want to thank those who have helped raise money for student scholarships. The luncheon is free. It starts at 11:30am in TE-101.

On Tuesday, we once again present our food pantry partnership with the St. Francis Center. If you bring your LATTC student ID, you can pick up fresh produce, food items and drinks, all for free. It starts at 10:30am in the K-Mall.

This Wednesday, we will be hosting the Youth for Human Rights conference in TE101 starting at 10:00am. The conference will look at the current issue of human trafficking and the protection of children. Several LATTC classes will be attending this discussion about the human toll in this country and others.

On Friday at 9:00am, a Prop 47 Expungement Clinic will take place in the cafeteria. If you know anyone considering expungement of their record, this will be a great opportunity to start the process. A clean record could mean greater career opportunities. It will take place in the cafeteria and there are still free appointment times available with the pro bono attorneys.

We hope you can join in the festivities surrounding our Gold Thimble Fashion Show on Friday, and we hope you finish the semester with determination. If we can help you just let us know.

Hoping for a great week for all.
